THE SR-22 FORM in California What is it and who qualifies?
An SR-22 form is often the "ticket" a sidelined motorist needs to get back on the road in California.
What is an SR-22 form?
The SR-22 form, also known as a California Insurance Proof Certificate, is a document filed by one's insurance company with the Department of Motor Vehicles that shows proof of liability insurance which is the minimum coverage in California required to legally operate a motor vehicle.
The SR-22 form is typically needed following a suspension of one's California Driver License and termination of auto insurance coverage for any of the following reasons:
- Misdemeanor or felony DUI conviction in California
- Driving without insurance and causing an accident
- Receiving too many tickets in a certain period or repeated driving infractions
- Having a license suspended or revoked
Who qualifies and who doesn't?
Many drivers will qualify for the SR-22 form, provided that they are able to obtain auto insurance. As only insurance companies can complete the paperwork with the DMV to process the SR-22 form, a driver must first find an auto insurance provider that is willing to issue a policy.
This is not always simple. Different providers will have different standards for deciding whether to offer coverage.
A lot depends on what's known as a driver's risk rating and the number of driving-related convictions. Rates vary and a licensed insurance agent should be consulted for a quote.
How long the form is required?
Drivers typically are required to have an SR-22 form for three years, and it must be kept on record with the DMV to avoid license suspension.
Do Not Let it Lapse!!
It is important for any driver required to hold an SR-22 form to continuously maintain auto insurance. Even a matter as simple as missing an insurance payment will result in the SR22 being cancelled and the driver's license invalidated.
